We work with every client to customize the coverages in a way that makes sense for their operations. General liability insurance covers third parties for bodily injury and property damage. In the junk removal industry your commercial auto policy covers you while you are in the "act of loading and unloading" which covers the majority of what you do. It is important to make sure that you general liability insurance for any other type of lawsuit or claim which may occur outside of that scope.
A common example we give is from a client that was working on removing a kitchen island for a homeowner. There was running water going into the island that the client was unaware of and they sawzawed through the water pipe causing water to damage the wood floors of the home. This type of claim would be considered a demolition claim which is incidental to the junk removal operations. As a result you would need to make sure that you have a general liability policy to cover this type of exposure with a company that allows for the incidental demo.
This is different for each state. Some states allow you to operate with several employees without requiring workers compensation coverage. Other states require it for employee one. You will want to check with your states workers compensation department to find out when you have to have the coverage in place. Owners/Officers/ and Executives of the company can always opt to exclude out of coverage to save on the cost of the coverage. Most commercial jobs will require that you carry workers compensation to step foot on their property or job-site to ensure that they are protected from a potential claim.
Most commercial jobs will require a commercial umbrella. The commercial umbrella is an added layer of coverage usually written in $1M increments which goes over your underlying commercial general liability, commercial auto and workers compensation coverage. It just adds an additional layer of coverage and protects the homeowner, property manager or storage facility that you are working with.
